Longwood Falls On The Road At Campbell 93-77

BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 93-77 men's basketball decision on the road Saturday afternoon at Campbell University of the Atlantic Sun Conference in Buies Creek, North Carolina.  The Lancers (3-3) fell behind by 16 points during the first 6:49 of the contest, finally caught the Camels (3-3) at 56-56 with 12:35 remaining, before the hosts secured the outcome with 13-17 free throws over the final 3:00.  LU was led by junior Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 14 points, while CU was led by Preston Dodson with a career-high and game-high 24 points.  Longwood returns to action on Monday night, Nov. 29, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson University at Willett Hall in Farmville with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
 
Longwood fell behind early and trailed 20-4 at 13:11 as Dodson and Lorne Merthie each scored seven quick points for Campbell.  The Lancers battled back to within 21-17 at 10:18 with a 13-1 run that included a trio of three-point field goals, two made by junior Jan van der Kooij|Tiendeveen, The Netherlands (Roelof van Echten).  A three-pointer by Merthie made it 29-19 at 8:29, and a basket inside made it 33-20 Camels with 6:48 left until halftime.  LU finished the half strong with a 14-7 run led by two more three-pointers from van der Kooij, and the team's seventh three-pointer of the period at 00:34 by freshman David Robinson|Chesterfield (Cosby) had the visitors within 40-34 at the intermission.
 
Campbell began the second half with three-straight layups to lead 46-34 at 19:08 before Longwood used a 13-5 run to close to within 51-47 at 15:41.  Junior Durann Neil|Pleasantville, N.J. (Leap Academy) made two three-pointers during the run, and junior transfer Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum College) added a three-pointer and a jumper.  The Lancers finally made it all the way back from the early 16-point deficit, tying the game at 56-56 with 12:35 left on a layup by Carter, and it was 58-58 at 11:16 on a jumper from Carter.  A three-pointer by junior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch) had LU within 62-61 at 9:08 before a 14-5 run by the Camels gave the hosts a 76-66 lead with 3:53 on the clock.  The visitors decided to make CU earn the win at the free throw line, and Campbell promptly made 13-17 free throws over the final 3:00 to secure the outcome.
 
Carter led Longwood with his 14 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists before fouling out late in the game.  Bowman and senior Aaron Mitchell|Motoaca (Manatee CC) each had 13 points for the Lancers with Mitchell adding five assists and Bowman four assists.  van der Kooij finished with 12 points, all in the first half, adding a career-high and game-high nine rebounds, while Washington had 11 points off the bench and Neil had nine points.  LU shot 50.0% (25-50) from the field, including 65.0% (13-20) on three-pointers, and 70.0% (14-20) at the free throw line.
 
Dodson led Campbell with his career-high and game-high 24 points, adding seven rebounds.  Merthie had 19 points and six assists for the Camels.  Junard Hartley finished with 15 points and a game-high nine assists, while Amir Celestin added 12 points off the bench.  CU shot 60.0% (33-55) from the field, including 30.0% (3-10) on three-pointers, and 66.7% (24-36) at the line.
 
Longwood and Campbell were playing for the fifth time in the sport of men's basketball as the Camels now lead the series at 3-2.  The Lancers had won the past two games between the two schools, including 88-80 last year in Farmville.
