RICHMOND, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team fell at Virginia Commonwealth University of the Colonial Athletic Association 4-0 on Wednesday evening in Richmond. Senior
Lauren Sullivan | Fredericksburg (Stafford) led the Lancers (3-12) with two shots, one on goal, against the Rams (10-4). Longwood returns to action on Sunday, October 17, when it travels to Radford to take on Radford University in a Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference match at 2 p.m..
The Rams took the early lead after scoring the eventual match-winning goal in the ninth minute on a shot by Kelsey Scherrer off a penalty corner. VCU's Chelsea Hill added a second goal just six seconds before halftime to take a 2-0 lead in to intermission.
VCU's Kayla Mueller scored in the first minute of the second half to extend the lead to 3-0 before the Rams added the fourth goal in the 41st minute. The Lancers had a chance to get on the board in the final minute of the match, but a shot by freshman
Caitlin Smith | Hampton (Kecoughtan) was stopped on the line by a VCU defender. The Lancers outshot the Rams 7-6 in the second half.
