Longwood Falls At Seattle 60-51

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Longwood University women's basketball fell at Seattle University 60-51 on Thursday evening in the Connolly Center in Seattle, Washington. Longwood (4-16) was led by freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) with 15 points and six rebounds. Seattle was paced by Ashley Brown with 22 points and seven rebounds. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, January 26, when they host Winthrop University at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall in Farmville.

The Lancers fell in to a hole early as the Redhawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 1:24 in to the game. Seattle's lead grew to 11-2 before a traditional three-point play by senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) and jumpers by freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) and junior # Krystal Garrison#/Fredericksburg (Courtland) trimmed the lead to 13-9 with 15:07 remaining. Brown scored the next eight points for Seattle as the Redhawks pushed the lead to 12 at 21-9 with 13:41 left in the first half. Longwood did not get closer than eight points the rest of the first half and Seattle hit a basket at the buzzer to take a 38-23 lead in to halftime.

Longwood opened the second half with an 8-0 run, capped off by a Garrison layup with 15:56 remaining that cut the lead to seven at 38-31. A pair of three-pointers by Samantha Messersmith and jumpers by Cassidy Murillo and Brown pushed the lead back to 14 at 49-35 with 12:34 remaining. The Lancers cut the lead to seven on a Coward layup with 10:33 remaining but Brown hit another three-pointer to give the Redhawks the 52-42 lead with 10:05 remaining. After a layup by Morgan Smith/Williamsport, Md. (Williamsport) with 5:37 remaining, the Lancers only made one more shot from the floor, a layup by Coward with 1:50 remaining. A pair of Fernandes free throws with 17 seconds remaining made the final score 60-51.

Longwood was led by Coward with 15 points (6-12 FG) and six rebounds. Sophomore Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Fernandes finished with eight points and three assists and Garrison scored seven points. The Lancers shot 37.0% (20-54) from the floor, including 20.0% (3-15) from three, and 50.0% (8-16) from the foul line. Longwood had seven steals and scored 19 points off turnovers. Longwood turned the ball over 12 times which tied for the lowest total this season.

Seattle was led by Brown with 22 points(9-18 FG) and seven rebounds. Tatiana Heck added 12 points and seven rebounds while Murillo scored 10 points with five assists and eight rebounds. The Redhawks shot 37.7% (23-61) from the floor, including 40.9% (9-22) from three, and 50.0% (5-10) from the foul line.
