Longwood Drops 75-60 Decision At Utah Valley

OREM, Utah - The Longwood University women's basketball dropped a 75-60 decision at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Monday night. The Lancers (4-15) were led by sophomore Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) with her first double-double of the season, recording a career-high 22 points with a career-high 11 rebounds. Utah Valley (4-15) was led by Jenna Johnson with 24 points. Longwood returns to action on Thursday, January 21, when they face Seattle University in Seattle, Washington at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Utah Valley jumped out to a 6-0 lead before a three-pointer by freshman Chelsea Coward/Mechanicsville (Hanover) got the Lancers on the board with 16:58 remaining in the first half. The Wolverines' lead grew to as many as seven points before the Lancers went on an 19-4 run, capped by a layup by jumper by Coward to give Longwood an eight point lead at 26-18 with 5:19 remaining in the half. Utah Valley fought back and took a 35-32 lead in to halftime.

Longwood grabbed the lead early in the second half on a traditional three-point play by Coward. Billups took over the next 2:30, scoring 10-straight points for the Lancers as they had a 49-45 lead with 13:40 remaining in the game. Utah Valley went on a 14-0 run over six minutes to take the 64-54 lead with 6:29 remaining. The Lancers cut the lead to six at 64-58 with 3:56 remaining on a Billups layup but the Wolverines pushed the lead to as many as 17 points before Billups scored her last points to make the final score 75-60.

Longwood was led by Billups with 22 points, including 16 in the second half. She also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Coward added 16 points and seven rebounds. Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) scored six points with nine assists. Longwood shot 36.1% (22-61) from the floor, including 16.7% (2-12) from three, and 87.5% (14-16) from the foul line. The Lancers had 11 steals with senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) leading the team with three.

Utah Valley was led by Johnson with 24 points. Erika Newbold added 18 points with eight rebounds and Kaycee Mansfield scored 11 points. The Wolverines shot 45.3% (24-53) from the field, including 35.7% (5-14) from three, and 78.6% (22-28) from the foul line. Asumi Nakayama dished out 10 assists with eight points.

Utah Valley out-rebounded Longwood 40-31 but the Lancers had a 36-28 advantage in points in the paint. The Lancers turned 17 Utah Valley turnovers into 17 points.
