FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University dropped a 4-0 men's soccer decision at George Washington University on Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.. Freshman Devin Pierce/Virginia Beach (Ocean Lakes) led Longwood (1-3-1) with three shots. The Lancers return to action on Sunday, September 20, when they travel to Richmond to take on Virginia Commonwealth University of the Colonial Athletic Association at 7 p.m..

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the first half. Longwood settled down in the last 10 minutes of the period and senior Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam CTC) had an open shot but Brendan Lafferty made the stop for the George Washington (3-2-0). The Lancers held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks in the first half but the Colonials outshot Longwood 5-4.

Longwood had another scoring opportunity to start the second half but junior Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) saw his shot slip just wide of the goal. George Washington broke the tie in the 53rd minute when Seth Rudolph took a pass from Kyle Albrecht and put the ball past Longwood goalkeeper Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson). The Colonials would add another goal two minutes later when Andy Stadler scored his first goal of the match. George Washington would add two more goals later in the half to make the final score 4-0.

“I told the boys whoever scored the first goal would have an edge,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “We have to learn we can't let the other team score first, it makes it harder for us to play our game. We will regroup at practice and prepare for the opportunity we have on Sunday against VCU.”

George Washington outshot Longwood 14-12 while the Lancers held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Helmick finished with three saves. Eight different Longwood players had at least one shot.

Stadler finished the match with two goals on five shots. Rudolph and Mike Rollings each had one goal while Albrecht had two assists.
