FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University field hockey team defeated Georgetown University of the Big East Conference 1-0 on Friday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Sophomore forward
Olga Knop/Berlin, Germany (Wener-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) scored the game-winning goal in the season opener. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, August 30, when it hosts Lock Haven University at 12 p.m. at the Athletics Complex.
The Lancers took advantage of a scoring opportunity early in the match when Knop found an opening 10 yards out in front of the net and put home the game-winning goal with 29:50 remaining in the first half. Longwood stayed aggressive and had four more shots in the first half, three of them on goal. Georgetown's Kristen Volpe had two scoring opportunities within one minute of each other in the first half but the first attempt was stopped by junior
Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) and the second was wide left.
Longwood controlled play in the second half as well, outshooting Georgetown 6-2 in the period.
“It is nice to start the season with a win,” said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. “We looked sloppy at times but we will work on that and we look forward to playing Lock Haven on Sunday.”
Knop attempted three shots, all of them on goal, while senior
Kelsey Turner/Virginia Beach (Tallwood) had two shots, both of them on goal. Freshman
Brittany Diaz/Chesapeake (Western Branch) had three shots with one on goal.
Longwood outshot Georgetown 11-4 and held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Bollinger had one save while earning the first shutout of her career.
