Longwood Concludes 2009 At Appalachian State; Falls 16-6, 4-2

BOONE, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped two baseball games on the road at Appalachian State University of the Southern Conference Friday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina.  The Lancers fell 16-6 in the completion of a game that had been suspended late Thursday night before falling 4-2 later Friday to the Mountaineers (32-19).  Longwood closed-out its 2009 campaign while finishing the season with a final record of 26-22.  It marked the 28th winning season in the program's 32-year history, and the 21st season with at least 25 wins.  Veteran head coach Charles 'Buddy' Bolding is now 844-457-4 through his 31 years as the mentor of Longwood Baseball.
   
In the game that began Thursday night and was finally suspended around 11 p.m. due to rain and lightning in the sixth inning, Longwood fell behind 4-0 as Appalachian State scored two runs in both the first and second innings before the Lancers took a brief lead at 5-4 with five runs in the third.  Sophomore Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-5) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI ground ball from classmate Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (0-2, 2 RBI).  Junior David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (3-4) doubled and scored on an RBI single by freshman Richie Palase/Staten Island, N.Y. (Moore Catholic) (1-3, RBI), who later crossed the plate on an RBI double from senior Jonathan Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, RBI).  Quigley scored ahead of freshman Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby) (1-3, 2 RBI) who hit a two-run home run to right field, his third homer this season.
   
The Mountaineers, though, answered with five runs in the third as well and six more runs in the fourth to lead 15-5.  LU scored a run in the fifth to make it 15-6 as Smiy led-off with a triple to right center field and scored the run on a sacrifice fly from Cerreto.  ASU added another run in the fifth as well to provide for the final 10-run margin.  Isaac Harrow (4-5, 2 RBI) and Jerod Faggart (4-5, RBI) each had four hits to lead the hosts, while Wes Hobson (3-5, 4 RBI) added three hits, including a home run and a double, with four RBI.  Aubrey Edens (6-3) earned the pitching win with the first 5.0 innings, scattering seven hits and six earned runs with one walk and five strikeouts.  Freshman Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-1) took the mound loss in relief with 1.1 innings, yielding 10 hits and 10 earned runs with two walks and one strikeout.  Senior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) pitched 2.0 innings of scoreless relief on Friday, allowing two hits with no walks and one strikeout as the visitors used five pitchers in the contest that witnessed 21 hits by the hosts.
   
In the season-finale, Longwood fell behind 2-0 as ASU scored two runs in the first inning.  The Lancers tied it at 2-2 in the fifth when Palase (0-2) drew a two-out walk and scored ahead of freshman #D.J. Pomposini#/Danville (George Washington) (1-3, RBI) who hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to right field.  The Mountaineers went back in front at 3-2 with a run in the fifth as well before adding another run in the eighth inning to provide for the final margin.
   
Freshman Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) (3-5) took the loss in relief with with 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and the decisive unearned run via a throwing error at second base along with two walks and one strikeout.  Josh Dowdy (6-2) earned the mound win for ASU with the first 6.0 innings, yielding just two hits and two earned runs with one walk and seven strikeouts.  Hobson (1-2, 2 RBI) and David Towarnicky (1-4, HR) led the Mountaineers offensively.
