CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Longwood University split a pair of softball games with the University of Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday evening, winning the first game 9-5 before falling 5-1 in the nightcap in Charlottesville. The Lancers moved to 16-15 and Virginia moved to 24-13. Sophomore
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) went 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in Longwood's win. The Lancers return to action on Friday, April 10, traveling to Clinton, South Carolina, to face Presbyterian College at 2 p.m.
The Lancers fell behind 1-0 after the first inning in the first game but would not stay down long. Senior
Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) hit a lead-off home run to start the second inning. Junior
Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) and sophomore
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) scored on a Simmons double to give Longwood a 3-1 lead.
Lashunda Davis/Natalie, Va. (Halifax) singled through the right side, scoring sophomore
Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry). Junior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) singled to left field, plating Simmons. Davis would come around to score when Radford reached on an error during her second at-bat of the inning, giving Longwood a 6-1 lead after two innings. The Cavaliers would get three runs back in the fourth inning on a Lauren McCaskey triple to pull within two at 6-4. The Lancers would add to their lead in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore
Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) scored after Simmons reached on an error by the third baseman, extending the lead to 7-4. Virginia would answer back in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 7-5. Longwood scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning on RBI singles by Margadonna and Nuckols making the score 9-5. Sophomore
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched the complete game and earned the win, giving up five runs on five hits while striking out two. Margadonna went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI while Nuckols was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with one RBI.
Longwood jumped on top early in the second game when Radford walked with the bases loaded to score Davis, giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead after one inning. Virginia would take the lead in the bottom of the second inning after Carly Winger and Sarah Tacke hit back-to-back home runs off of sophomore
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) to start the inning. Spencer would escape the inning without any more damage but the Cavaliers had a 2-1 lead. Virginia added another run in the third inning and two in the fifth to make the final score 5-1. Spencer pitched 4.2 innings in the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits wile striking out one. Wells came in and finished he game, giving up one hit in 1.1 innings. Ketsdever went 2-for-3 in the second game, her ninth multi-hit game of the season.
Virginia was led by McCaskey with three RBI on 1-for-5 hitting. Giannina Cipolloni went 3-for-6 and scored two runs.
