Longwood Splits With Campbell; Lancers Win 8-3 And Fall 10-0

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University split a softball doubleheader with Campbell University on Thursday evening, winning the second game 8-3 after falling in the first game 10-0 in five innings. The Lancers moved to 23-20 while the Camels moved to 34-12. Freshman Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) went 3-for-6 with a triple and two RBI to pace Longwood. The Lancers will take the next nine days off for spring semester exams before traveling to Gainesville, Florida to take on the No. 1 ranked University of Florida on Saturday, May 2.

Campbell jumped on top in the second game, scoring one run in the top of the first inning on a Christina Melton RBI single. The Camels added another run in the top of the third inning when Lizzie Goldbach scored from first after a throw by Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) took a short hop on Long at first base, giving Campbell the 2-0 lead. Longwood cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning on a Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) home run to left field. The Lancers rallied in the fourth inning. Kami Nuckols/Glen Allen (Patrick Henry) started the inning with an infield hit and a stolen base. Long tripled to center field, scoring Nuckols. Long would score on a Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) RBI single. Wells got her second RBI of the night on a single, putting Longwood ahead 4-2 after four innings. The Lancers tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Long came up with the bases loaded and singled through the left side. Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) followed with a two-RBI double to put the Lancers ahead 7-2. In the sixth inning, Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) hit a one-out double and stole third. Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and advanced to third after the throw by the right fielder went in to the Longwood dugout. Simmons scored on the play, giving the Lancers an 8-2 lead after six innings. Campbell got one run back on a Taylor McGee solo home run, making the final 8-3. Wells pitched the complete game, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out five. Long went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Wells went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In the first game, both teams pitchers started strong, each throwing two perfect innings to start the game. Campbell struck first in the third inning, scoring one run on three hits. The Camels did most of their damage in the fourth inning, scoring eight runs on six hits. Campbell added one more run in the fifth inning to make the final 10-0. Long broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single to center field in the fifth inning. Wells started in the circle for the Lancers and lasted 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits with two walks. Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Lauren Stephen went 2-for-3 for the Camels with three RBI and two runs scored. Hilary Wheatley added two RBI on 3-for-3 hitting. Brittany Stanley threw a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts.
