Longwood Splits At Virginia Tech; Lancers Win 5-3 And Fall 4-3

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Longwood University split a softball doubleheader with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Tuesday evening, winning the first game 5-3 before falling 4-3 in the nightcap. The Lancers fell to 22-19 while the Hokies improved to 20-23. Senior Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) went 2-for-5 with one home run and one double in the two games. Longwood returns to the field on Thursday, April 23, hosting a doubleheader with Campbell University beginning at 5 p.m.

The Lancers struck in the second inning in game one. Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) scored from first on a Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) RBI double to give Longwood the early 1-0 lead. Virginia Tech got two runs back in the bottom of the second inning. Wells hit one batter with the bases loaded and walked the next, giving the Hokies the 2-1 lead. Longwood tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning after Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) singled and advanced to second on an error. Radford sacrificed her over to third and Long scored on an Amy Betterton/Rocky Mount (Franklin County) groundout to the shortstop. Virginia Tech answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth to pull ahead 3-2. The Lancers jumped ahead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on one hit. Long walked, followed by a Radford double. Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward) entered the game as a pinch runner for Radford then Betterton walked to load the bases. Long scored on a Margadonna groundout to the pitcher. Matthews scored when Wells reached on an error by the third baseman, giving Longwood the 4-3 lead. The Lancers added one more run in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 5-3. Wells retired the side in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win. Long went 1-for-3 in the first game with one RBI and scored two runs. Wells improved to 18-15 on the season with the win, giving up three runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking four.

The Lancers jumped on top first in the second game. Radford hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning, giving Longwood the 1-0 lead. The Lancers added another run in the third inning when Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) scored on a Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) single. Virginia Tech answered with one swing of the bat in the fourth inning when Kim Jalm hit a grand slam off Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) to take the 4-2 lead. The Lancers got one run back in the fifth inning when Ketsdever tripled and scored when the second baseman threw the ball into the dugout. Longwood would not score again, falling 4-3. Spencer dropped to 4-4 on the season with the loss. She gave up four runs on four hits in four innings while striking out three. Ketsdever went 3-for-4 in the second game with one RBI and one run scored.
