FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University split a pair of softball games with Elon University on Wednesday afternoon at Lancer Field in Farmville, winning 7-4 and falling 10-8 in the second game. Sophomore
Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield) went 5-for-7 on the day with two doubles and one home run. Longwood moves to 10-13 and Elon is now 8-12. The Lancers return to action on Sunday, March 29, when they travel to Washington, D.C., for a doubleheader with Georgetown University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
The Lancers fell behind early in the first game, giving up two runs on a Kaitlyn Piazzolla single in the first inning. Longwood answered in the bottom-half of the inning when
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake, Va. (Hickory) scored on an
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) single. Kramer advanced to third on a
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) flyout and scored when
Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) hit a sacrifice fly to left field. Elon scored one run in the top of the third inning but Longwood answered back with Long's second sacrifice fly of the game, scoring Simmons to tie the game at 3-3. The Lancers added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Simmons three-run home run to left field, making the score 6-3 Longwood. Nelson added a solo home run in the fifth inning to give Longwood a 7-3 lead. Elon would get one run back in the sixth inning but could get no closer, with Longwood winning 7-4.
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) pitched a complete game for the Lancers, giving up four runs, only three of them earned, on five hits while striking out five. Simmons went 2-for-4 with three RBI and scored three runs in the first game. Long had two RBI on her two sacrifice flies.
Longwood fell behind early again in the second game.
Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) got the start and gave up two singles, a double and a home run before being replaced by Wells. Wells got three outs to get out of the inning but Longwood trailed 4-0. The Lancers got two runs back in the bottom-half of the inning.
Lashunda Davis/Natalie, Va. (Halifax County) scored on a Ketsdever double and Ketsdever came around to score on a Nelson single. Longwood exploded for six runs in the second inning. Ketsdever singled, driving in two runs. Davis scored on a throwing error by the short stop. Then Long scored on a Nelson double.
Emily Radford/Tacoma, Wash. (Fife) homered to left field, scoring Nelson. When the inning was over, the Lancers had scored six runs on four hits and two errors and led the game 8-4. Elon got two runs back in the fourth inning, one on a Lauren Taylor home run and the other on a sacrifice fly. The Phoenix loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning on a walk, a fielders choice and a single before Piazzolla hit a grand slam home run to give them the 10-8 lead. Wells pitched seven innings for Longwood, giving up six runs on five hits while striking out eight. Ketsdever went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Nelson went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Radford was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one home run.
