FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 7-3 baseball decision to visiting Le Moyne College Friday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. Freshmen
Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (3-4, RBI) and
Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-3, RBI) each hit their first collegiate home runs for the Lancers (3-4). Sean Paino (2-5, 3 RBI) led the Dolphins (2-5, 3 RBI) with two hits and three RBI, including a two-run single in the ninth inning. Longwood and Le Moyne will continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday, February 28, at Lancer Stadium beginning at 3 p.m.. Admission is free to all Longwood baseball games.
Longwood fell behind 2-0 in the second inning as Paino doubled to plate a run before a one-out RBI single from Matt Marra (2-4, 2 RBI). The Lancers scored a run in the second as well when Gwaltney led-off the frame with a solo home run to left field. The Dolphins made it 3-1 in the third inning as Chris Edmondson (2-3, RBI) had an RBI single. LU was within 3-2 after scoring a run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly to right field by senior
Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (0-3, RBI). Unfortunately, LC added four insurance runs in the ninth inning to lead 7-2 as Marra homered to left field to begin the at-bat. Matt Nandin (2-5, RBI) added an RBI single through the right side before Paino contributed his two-run single. Newman provided for the final margin with his solo home run to left field while leading-off the inning.
Sophomore
Troy Dickman/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-1) took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 8.0 innings on the mound, scattering eight hits and four earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts. Sophomore
Garrett Lythgoe/Chesterfield (Matoaca) pitched the ninth inning in relief, allowing two hits and three earned runs with three walks and one strikeout. Junior
David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-5) also had two hits for the Lancers.
Le Moyne's Jeff Tardiff (1-0) earned the mound win with the first 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with no walks and six strikeouts, while Tom McDermott (1)?picked-up the save with the final 1.2 innings, yielding one hit and one earned runs with two walks with three strikeouts.
