Longwood Defeats Bucknell 16-3, Falls To St. John's 8-0 At Lead Off Classic

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split two softball games during the Lead Off Classic Sunday at Lancer Field in Farmville, defeating Bucknell University 16-3 before falling 8-0 to St. John's University in the tournament championship.  Freshman Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) (4-6, 2 RBI) and sophomore Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (3-6, 2 RBI) led the Lancers, now 4-4, during the two games.  St. John's of the Big East Conference avenged a 2-1 loss to LU on Saturday while improving to 6-3, and Bucknell of the Patriot League is now 5-5.  Longwood will host the Longwood Spring Classic next weekend, February 28-March 1, joined by Central Connecticut State, Iona, and Maryland-Baltimore County at Lancer Field in Farmville.
   
Against Bucknell, Longwood scored six runs in the first inning, seven more runs in the second, one in the third, and two runs in the fourth inning en route to the home win.  In the first, sophomore Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) (1-1, 3 RBI) provided a two-run single while also driving in runs were freshman Courtney Long/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-2, 2 RBI) with a single, sophomore Tricia Nelson/Plainfield, Ill. (Plainfield) (1-2, RBI) with a double, and Margadonna with another single.  In the second, Wells walked to force in a run, Margadonna (2-4, 2 RBI) had an RBI ground out, sophomore Nicole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) (2-2, RBI) had an RBI single, as did Kramer (3-4, 2 RBI) to the infield, classmate Brittany Matthews/Farmville (Prince Edward County) (0-3, RBI) also drew a walk to plate a run, and Long walked likewise to force yet another run across the plate.
   
Freshman Lashunda Davis/Natalie (Halifax County) (1-2, RBI) added an RBI double in the third inning for the Lancers.  Wells (3-3) went the distance on the mound for the pitching win, scattering eight hits and three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts over the 5.0 innings.
   
Against St. John's, Longwood managed just two hits by Kramer (1-2) and Margadonna (1-2) as the Red Storm scored one run in the third, three runs in the fifth, and four runs in the decisive six innings.  Sophomore Brittany Spencer/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (0-1) took the mound loss for the Lancers, yielding eight hits and eight earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts.
   
Roxy Struble (2-4, 3 RBI) led SJU with a pair of hits, including a double, and three RBI, while Rachel Paragas (1-2, 2 RBI) added a double as well and two RBI.  Linzee Sumrall (3-1) allowing just the two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
