FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University won both of its softball games during day one of the Lead Off Classic Saturday at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers took a 2-1 victory past St. John's University in the opening game of the tournament before earning a 1-0 win past Quinnipiac University. Longwood improved to 3-3 on the season and will play again on Sunday, February 22, against Bucknell University at Lancer Field beginning at 12 p.m.. Championship-round competition will continue on Sunday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m..
Against St. John's, Longwood was led by sophomore
Maggie Margadonna/Sea Girt, N.J. (Wall Township) (1-2, RBI) with a solo home run, and junior
Camille Ketsdever/Irvine, Calif. (Irvine) (1-3, RBI) with the decisive RBI single. St. John's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after loading the bases with one out before a walk allowed its lone run of the game. Sophomore
Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) (2-3) settled down afterwards and earned the complete-game pitching win with 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits with the one earned run along with three walks and four strikeouts. Margadonna tied it at 1-1 with her solo blast to left center field with two outs in the fifth, and Ketsdever secured the victory with her one-out single in the sixth that plated sophomore
Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) (1-3) who had led-off the inning with a single as well.
Against Quinnipiac, Longwood scored the lone run of the contest in the third inning as freshman
Ashley Kramer/Ashburn (Broad Run) (0-1) drew a lead-off walk and scored on an RBI double to left center field by Simmons (1-3, RBI).
