Longwood Falls At Winthrop 73-50

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 73-50 women's basketball road decision at Winthrop University of the Big South Conference Tuesday night in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  The Lancers were led by freshman Sierra Fletcher/Utica, Ohio (Utica) with 13 points while dropping their record to 6-16.  The Eagles were led by Jessica Fansler with a game-high 16 points off the bench while improving their record to 11-11.  Longwood will play again on Saturday, February 14, remaining on the road at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, New Jersey beginning at 2 p.m..
   
Longwood fell behind early as Winthrop scored the first 17 points of the game to lead 17-0 at 14:01 with seven quick points from Tiffany Rodd.  The Lancers finally got on the scoreboard at 13:37 when sophomore Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) made 1-2 free throws.  The Eagles continued their early momentum and extended the margin to 27-3 at 8:59 on a three-point field goal.  LU responded with eight unanswered points from four different players to pull within 27-11 at 4:54, but the hosts outscored the visitors 11-0 over the remainder of the period to lead 38-11 at halftime.
   
Longwood tried to rally back in the second half, taking advantage of a 14-3 run to start the final 20 minutes to close to within 41-25 with 14:37 remaining following a jumper by freshman Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) after she had made a three-pointer as well.  It was 52-34 at 9:03 after a three-pointer from Fletcher, and 60-41 with 6:18 on the clock when Fletcher made 1-2 free throws.  Winthrop, though, extended the margin back to 27 points at 73-46 with just 1:57 left before the Lancers scored the final four points of the contest to provide for the final outcome.
   
Fletcher led Longwood with her 13 points (6-8 FT).  Garrison, Zieverink, and sophomore Cierra Baker/Windsor, Conn. (Windsor) (off the bench) each finished with seven points for the Lancers.  LU shot 33% (16-49) from the field, including 23% (3-13) on three-pointers, and 60% (15-25) at the free throw line.
   
Fansler led Winthrop with her game-high 16 points (4-6 3FG).  Ashley Fann added 15 points (5-6 FG) off the bench, while Rodd had 13 points (4-8 3FG) for the Eagles.  WU shot 51% (25-49) from the field, including 48% (10-21) on three-pointers, and 68% (13-19) at the line.
