Longwood Falls At West Virginia 74-43

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team dropped a 74-43 decision at West Virginia University of the Big East Conference in Morgantown, West Virginia on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) lead Longwood with a career-high 15 points and seven rebounds while junior guard Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) added 14 points. The Lancers (2-8) return to action on Tuesday, December 15, when they host Campbell University at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall on campus in Farmville. 

The Lancers fell behind 14-4 in the first six minutes behind eight points by Liz Repella. Garrison nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 14-7 before the Mountaineers (9-1) outscored Longwood 30-9 over the rest of the first half to take a 44-16 lead into halftime. Garrison scored seven points in the first half and freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) added six points and four rebounds in the opening period.

Longwood stepped up the defense to start the second half. The Lancers held WVU without a field goal for the first 9:31 of the second period. Longwood slowly chipped away at the lead, closing the gap to 46-29 with 11:42 remaining in the game. Garrison scored seven points during the run while Zieverink added four and freshman Erin Neal/Durham, N.C. (Hillside) contributed a pair of free throws. The Mountaineers slowly pulled away, extending the lead to as many as 34 points with 2:39 remaining en route to the 74-43 victory. Zieverink scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half and was the first Longwood player since Ashley Mason during the 2003-04 season to shoot 100% (5-5) from the field.

Smith scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds while Neal finished the game with five points, two assists and two steals. The Lancers shot 28.0% (14-50) from the floor and 50.0% (4-8) from three. Longwood went 11-17 from the foul line.

Repella was one of four Mountaineers in double figures with 20 points, including 17 in the first half. She shot 6-14 from the floor and 4-9 from three with five steals. Natalie Burton, Korinne Campbell and Vanessa House each added 10 points. WVU shot 41.1% (23-56) from the floor and 29.4% (5-17) from three.

The Lancers turned the ball over 23 times and WVU turned those turnovers into 24 points. The Mountaineers outrebounded Longwood 49-30. WVU controlled the paint, outscoring Longwood 32-14 inside and blocking 10 shots.
