Longwood Falls To Morehead State 68-62 On Final Day Of Lancer Classic

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to Morehead State University 68-62 on Sunday afternoon in Willett Hall in Farmville on the final day of the Lancer Classic. Sophomore Morgan Smith/Williamsport, Md. (Williamsport) led the Lancers with 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double and the second by a Longwood player this season. Senior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) added 12 points and eight assists. The Lancers return to action on Friday, December 4, when they travel to New Orleans, Louisiana where they will face the University of New Orleans at 6 p.m. ET in the Big Easy Classic.

Longwood (2-5) jumped out to a 10-4 lead with 16:08 left in the first half on three baskets by freshman Crystal Smith/Richmond (Meadowbrook) and a pair of buckets by Fernandes and Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas (La Porte). Morehead State (4-3) pulled even after a pair of three-pointers to tie the score at 10-10. Longwood pulled away and had a 25-15 lead with 5:27 remaining. Morgan Smith hit a pair of three-pointers during the run. The Eagles cut the lead to 33-27 at halftime.

Morehead State tied the score at 33-33 with 17:19 remaining in the game after a pair of Connie Buchanan layups and an Abby Steele jumper. Longwood pulled ahead again after Fernandes hit a pair of foul shots. The Eagles went ahead for good with 14:36 remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Courtney Lumpkin. The lead would swell to as many as 13 at 62-49 with 5:01 remaining in the game. Longwood cut the lead to four at 66-62 after a Morgan Smith layup with 0:09 remaining. MSU hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game to make the final 68-62.

Junior Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) was the third Lancer to finish with double-digit points, scoring 13 on 5-for12 shooting. Fernandes went 4-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Tobeck finished the game with nine points and six rebounds. Longwood shot 41.0% (25-61) from the floor and 27.3% (6-22) from three.

Morehead State was led by Chynna Bozeman with a game-high 17 points and four assists. Tiffany Hamilton added 12 points and Steel finished with 11 points and four assists. The Eagles shot 42.9% (24-56) from the floor, including 50.0% (14-28) in the second half. MSU shot 37.9% (11-29) from three and 52.9% (9-17) from the line.

Both teams finished with 39 rebounds. MSU turned the ball over 18 times while Longwood only had 15 turnovers, it's second-lowest number this season.
