GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Longwood University men's soccer team fell at Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC) opponent Adelphi University 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon in Garden City, New York. Junior Harvey Headley/Coventry, England (Stoke Park) scored for Longwood (2-9-2, 0-2 ASC). The Lancers return to action on Saturday, October 17, when they travel to Baltimore, Maryland to face the University of Maryland-Baltimore County at 1 p.m..

The game opened with a flurry when Adelphi (8-1-4, 1-0-1 ASC) struck in the seventh minute when Issa Tall took the ball through the defense and around the goalkeeper to score. The Panthers would add another goal in the 11th minute when Tall scored on a header off a free kick. Headley would pull the Lancers within one goal when he took a pass from senior Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) and beat the goalkeeper to make the score 2-1. Tall again had an answer in the 14th minute when he collected a loose ball and sent it to the far side, past the goalkeeper to give Adelphi a 3-1 cushion.

After a combined four goals in the first 14 minutes the teams settled down and played the remaining 76 minutes without either team scoring a goal. Longwood had several opportunities in the final 20 minutes of the match, including several close-range shots, but the Adelphi goalkeeper Thorne Holder turned away the threat.

“We are a young team, and that was on display in the first 20 minutes of the match,” said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. “There was a stiff wind blowing in the first half and we let that affect our play. When we had the advantage of the wind we threatened but couldn't convert. We have to regroup and get ready for UMBC on Saturday.”

Adelphi was led by Tall who recorded his first hat trick of the season with three goals. Holder finished with five saves, including four in the second half.

Longwood outshot the Panthers 15-9 and had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
