Longwood Defeats George Mason 1-0 In Second Overtime Period

Sophomore Lauren Trizna Strikes Games-Winner Against Patriots

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an exciting 1-0 women's soccer victory in overtime past visiting George Mason University Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  Sophomore Lauren Trizna/Manassas (Osbourn Park) scored the game-winning goal at 100:48 on a free kick from 35 yards as the Lancers took their third OT victory this season while improving to 4-2-1; the Patriots dropped to 3-5-0.  Longwood is scheduled to play again on Friday night, September 26, hosting Saint Francis University of Pennsylvania at the Athletics Complex on Johnston Drive beginning at 7 p.m..
   
Longwood and George Mason battled scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation, and the first 10-minute extra period as well bef0re a foul on the Patriots at the start of the second overtime presented the scoring opportunity.  Trizna placed her kick over the keeper's head before the ball struck the crossbar and bounced straight down and into the back of the net for the home triumph.
   
George Mason took a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in attempts on-goal, and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks as well.  Redshirt-sophomore keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) made eight saves, including five in the first half, to keep Longwood in the match.  Biddle played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers, posting her fifth shutout in seven matches.  Redshirt-sophomore Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) had three shots for the hosts, including shots on-goal in each half that were saved.  Alex Bodenschatz played the entire match in goal for the Patriots as well with those two saves.  Kelly Keelan had six shots to lead GMU, including a good opportunity at goal at the end of regulation (89:56) that went high.
   
It was the first-ever meeting in women's soccer between Longwood and George Mason.
