BOX SCORE GAME TWO

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped both games of a doubleheader to visiting North Carolina A&T Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, falling 7-4 in the first game and 4-2 in 11 innings in the second game. The Lancers are now 20-17 after dropping both games of the doubleheader on Coach Bolding Day, while the Aggies of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) are now 17-23. Longwood and North Carolina A&T will play the three-game weekend series finale on Sunday at Lancer Stadium beginning at 12 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood trailed 7-2 through four innings and never was able to mount a threat. The Lancers plated a run in the first inning when freshman Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-4) singled through the right side with one out and scored on an RBI double down the left-field line by classmate Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) (2-5, 2 RBI). LU added another run in the second inning as senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4) led-off with a single and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-3, RBI). The hosts scored in the fifth when Bailey doubled to left-center field with one out and came home on an RBI single by Morreim. The Lancers scored their final run in the seventh as sophomore Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (2-2) reached on a pinch-hit single and scored on a two-out RBI single from sophomore Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-4, RBI).

Sophomore Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Ballston Spa) (5-4) took the pitching loss with the first 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs, six earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Jonathan Watson/Richmond (L.C. Bird) worked the final 4.0 scoreless innings, yielding just one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.

North Carolina A&T was led by Joe McIntyre (3-5, 2 RBI) with three doubles and two RBI, while CJ Beatty (2-4, 2 RBI) had two hits, including an opposite-field home run down the left-field line in the first inning. Tim Johnson (7-2) got the mound win with the first 7.0 innings, scattering 11 hits and four earned runs with seven strikeouts and one walk. Chris Eggers (1) picked-up the save with the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with one strikeout.

In the nightcap, Longwood rallied from a 2-0 deficit through five innings with two runs in the sixth as the scheduled seven-inning contest went to extra innings tied at 2-2. The Lancers had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th inning but a ground-ball double play sent the game to the 11th as North Carolina A&T plated two runs for the win and a sweep of the twinbill. McIntyre (2-5, RBI) collected two hits, including the decisive two-out RBI single in the 11th, to lead the Aggies, while Phillip Brewington (3-4) had three hits and Nick Rogers (2-5, 2 RBI) also added two hits and two RBI. Eggers (2-5) got the pitching win, this time, with the final 2.0 shutout innings, yielding no hits with two walks.

Longwood plated two runs in the sixth as Jones (2-5) and Morreim (2-4) reached on back-to-back singles and scored on a one-out, two-run single by von Gersdorff (1-5, 2 RBI). Unfortunately, that at-bat ended on a double-play ball as well. Senior Isaac Weiderman/Chillicothe, Ohio (Huntington) (1-1) took the mound loss with the final 3.0 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs with one strikeout. Freshman Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) had pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering six hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts (tying a career-high) and one walk.

Longwood 30th-year head coach Charles 'Buddy' Bolding was recognized in a special pre-game ceremony for his 800 career collegiate wins. Coach Bolding is currently 815-426-3 as head coach of the Lancers.
