NORFOLK, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 11-1 baseball decision on the road at Old Dominion University Tuesday night in Norfolk. The Lancers are now 20-14 this season, while the Monarchs of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) are now 17-17. Longwood will play again on Wednesday evening, April 16, hosting the College of William and Mary of the CAA at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m. -- there is free admission to all home spring sports events at Longwood.
At ODU, Longwood allowed five runs in the first inning before the host Monarchs added single runs in both the fourth and sixth innings ahead of two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings. Old Dominion was led by three hits each from Jimmy Miles (3-5) and Anthony Shawler (3-5, 2 RBI) who had a triple and added two RBI, while Chris Baker (1-1, RBI) and Donnie Corsner (1-1, RBI) each hit late home runs. Cory Toth (1-1) had the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings on the mound for the Monarchs, yielding just one hit and the one earned run with four strikeouts and six walks.
Longwood avoided the shutout with a run in the eighth inning as sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (0-2) drew a lead-off walk from Toth and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (0-3). Sophomore Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (1-2) collected the only hit for the Lancers. Freshman Garrett Lythgoe/Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-1) took the pitching loss for the Lancers with the first 5.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.
Old Dominion now leads the overall series against Longwood since 1988 at 7-1.
