Longwood Sweeps Binghamton 6-5, 4-3

Senior Nick von Gersdorff Hits Decisive Three-Run Double In Opener Against Bearcats

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University swept a baseball doubleheader from visiting Binghamton University Saturday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville, winning the first game 6-5 and taking the second game 4-3. The exciting come-from-behind victory in the opener was the 800th career win for 30th-year head coach Charles ‘Buddy’ Bolding who is now 801-412-3 (see accompanying story). The Lancers (6-3) have now won four-straight games with the two-game sweep against the Bearcats (2-7). Longwood and Binghamton will play the three-game weekend series finale on Sunday, March 9, at at Lancer Stadium beginning at 12 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood spotted Binghamton a 5-0 lead into its half of the seventh inning before scoring six runs in the bottom of the seventh to give Coach Bolding his milestone victory. In the inning, sophomore Topher Ellis/Virginia Beach (First Colonial) (0-4) reached bases on a throwing error to open the frame. Classmate Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (1-4) followed with a one-out single off the glove of the BU third baseman, moving Ellis to second. Junior Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (3-5) singled to right field to load the bases before sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (1-1, 2 RBI) provided a pinch-hit, two-run double to center field that scored Ellis and Kimble. Classmate Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-3, RBI) followed with an RBI single to second base that plated Quigley. After a walk to sophomore Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) (0-0) who was pinch-hitting, senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4, 3 RBI) came through with the clutch three-run double to center field that scored Smiy, Cerreto, and Havers with the winning runs.

Sophomore Lance Harting/Ballston Spa, N.Y. (Balltson Spa) (2-0) earned the pitching win with the final 2.2 shutout innings, allowing no hits with four strikeouts. Freshman Garrett Lythgoe/Chesterfield (Matoaca) had went the first 6.1 innings on the mound, scattering nine hits and four earned runs with one strikeout. Junior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-5) also had two hits for the Lancers, while Ryan James (2-4) and Corey Taylor (2-4, RBI) each collected two hits for Binghamton. Greg Lane (1-2) took the pitching loss for the Bearcats with the final 2.0 innings, yielding six hits and five earned runs.

In the nightcap, Longwood rallied again after Binghamton led 3-0 in the third inning before the Lancers scored four runs in their half of the third for another comeback victory. In the third, Ellis (2-3) got it going again with an infield hit to second base. Bailey (1-3) followed with a single to left field, and freshman Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (1-3) singled through the left side to load the bases. With one out, Quigley (0-1, RBI) drew a walked to score Ellis before Cerreto (1-3, RBI) followed with a single to third base scoring Bailey. Smiy Jr. (0-2, RBI) then reached on a fielder's choice RBI that scored Jones, and Quigley also crossed the plate with the winning run after a throwing error on the play.

Junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) (1-1) took the pitching win with a complete-game effort, allowing eight hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts over the 7.0 innings. Joe Charron (2-4, RBI) hit a solo home run for Binghamton, while Taylor (1-3, RBI) added an RBI as well. Jeff Dennis (0-1) also went the pitching distance for the Bearcats, yielding six hits and three earned runs with eight strikeouts in the hard-luck loss.
