MORGANTOWN, WV. – The Longwood University women's basketball team dropped its contest Tuesday night at Big East member West Virginia 76-51. The Lancers fell to 4-8 on the season, while the Mountaineers improve to 10-2. Longwood was led by junior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) who ended with a team-high 15 points, shooting 11-16 from the charity stripe. Fernandes was also the teams leading rebounder, grabbing six boards including four on the defensive end. Longwood returns home for its next three contests beginning with Central Connecticut State on January 2 at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall. Admission to the game will be free.
West Virginia jumped out front early, going on a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of action. After capturing the early lead the Mountaineers would never look back in the half, maintaining control of the lead until halftime, entering the locker room up 39-23.
Freshman Brooke Long/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) led the Lancers in the second half, knocking down four baskets from behind the three-point arc for 12 points. Fernandes collected eight points in the second half for the Lancers, six of which came from the free-throw line.
Sarah Miles of West Virginia was the games leading scorer with 22 points, while teammate Liz Repella had 19. Fernandes was the Lancers leading scorer with 15 points. Three members of the Mountaineers led the game in rebounds with Natalie Burton, Sarah Miles and Takisha Granberry each grabbing seven boards. Fernandes had six rebounds for the Lancers, while Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) had four.
Longwood shot 30% (14-47) from field goal range, while West Virginia shot 46% (28-61). The Lancers finished shooting 71% (17-24) from behind the free-throw line, while the Mountaineers finished shooting 54% (15-28).
