FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University women's basketball team fell to Atlantic Sun Conference member Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon at Willett Hall by the final score of 61-41. Longwood falls to 4-6 on the season, while Kennesaw State improves to 4-5. The Lancers were led by junior point guard
Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) who led the team in scoring with 10 points, while sophomore
Cierra Baker/Windsor, Conn. (Windsor) led the Lancers in rebounds with nine. Longwood returns to the court on Sunday, December 28, against Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
Fernandes, who was just named to the North Florida Holiday Classic All-Tournament team, led the Lancers offensively while finishing 4-5 from the free-throw line. Senior
Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) recorded eight points for Longwood, while classmate
Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) ended with six points. Jennifer Baker of Kennesaw State was the game's leading scorer, recording 13 points. DeAndrea Bullock led both teams in rebounds as she collected 12.
The Lancers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a made layup by Steg with an assist from Baker. Kennesaw State would battle back seven minutes later to capture a 9-7 lead. After taking control of the scoreboard, the half belonged to the Owls who never looked back. The Lancers would cut the Owls lead to four in the opening minutes of the second half, but Kennesaw State would not allow Longwood to get any closer. Kennesaw State would eventually pull away from the Lancers in the final five minutes of the game to take the victory.
Longwood shot 30% (17-56) from the floor, while Kennesaw State shot 42% (25-60). The Lancers finished shooting 13% (2-15) from three-point range, while the Owls shot 18% (2-11).
