Longwood Defeats North Florida 46-38 In Late Game Comeback

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Longwood University women's basketball team defeated the University of North Florida, 46-38, on Wednesday night at UNF Arena in the North Florida Holiday Classic. The Lancers improve to 4-4 on the season and 1-0 in the tournament, while the Lady Ospreys fall to 2-6 on the season and 0-1 in the tournament. Freshman Brooke Long/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) and sophomore Krystal Garrison/Fredericksburg (Courtland) led the Lancers in points with 11 each. Senior Anna Steg/Vienna (George C. Marshall) was the team's leading rebounder hauling in 10. Longwood returns to action on Thursday, December 18 at 5 p.m. for game two of the UNF Holiday Classic, taking on Jacksonville State.

 

The first half got off to a slow start for the Lancers, with North Florida jumping out to an early lead and holding Longwood scoreless for the first six minutes of the half. Senior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) put the Lancers on the board with 14:25 remaining in the first half after a made jumper. The Lancers would try to cut the Osprey lead several times in the first half, but would never take control of the scoreboard.

 

Longwood found itself shooting 29% (7-24) from the floor in the first half of action, while North Florida shot 31% (11-36). The Lancers ended the game shooting 31% (15-49) from the field, while the Ospreys finished shooting just 28% (17-61).

 

North Florida would remain in control of the scoreboard in the second half until the final four minutes of the game. Garrison gave the Lancers their first lead of the game after knocking down a wide open three-pointer, with an assist from freshman Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne). Longwood would never look back following the made three-pointer, increasing its lead to an eight point victory.
