HOUSTON, Texas - The Longwood University men's soccer team dropped its final regular season game of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling to Atlantic Soccer Conference newcomer Houston Baptist 3-0 in Houston, Texas. The Lancers fall to 7-8-3 (2-2 ASC) on the season, while Houston Baptist improves to 10-6 (3-1 ASC). Longwood returns to home to host the 2008 ASC Tournament at the Athletics Complex, November 12-16 with the Lancers being the No. 3 seed.
The Lancers ended the game even with the Huskies in corner kicks with both teams taking five, while Houston Baptist had a 12-9 advantage in shots.
The first half of action was a quiet one with neither team generating much offense. The Lancers would take all five of their corners in the the first half, but would come up empty handed. Houston Baptist would have a couple of scoring opportunities but would not be able to find net, sending the game to halftime tied 0-0.
Houston Baptist scored its first goal of the game in the 49th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Josh Whaley/Richmond (Darlington Academy) came up with a save on the initial shot, but would not be able to hang onto the ball as the rebound was slipped into the net.
The Huskies second goal came at 61:03 after a slip up on defense for the Lancers. Houston Baptist ended the scoring in the 80th minute after Ruzhdi Halili sent the ball into the top-corner of the net, just out of reach of a diving Whaley. Whaley ended the game with four saves.
