Longwood Falls At Syracuse 72-40

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Longwood University women's basketball team dropped a hard fought road contest against BIG?EAST?conference member Syracuse on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Orange 72-40. The Lancers fall to 2-4 on the season, while the Orange improve to 5-2. Senior Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) and freshmen Kayla Loughner/Brinkslow, Md. (Good Counsel) and Brittanni Billups/Goldsboro, N.C. (Eastern Wayne) led Longwood in scoring with six points each. Longwood returns home for its next matchup, hosting George Mason on Thursday, December 4 at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall.
   
The Lancers held their own in the opening minutes of the game, keeping Syracuse within single digits for the first 10 minutes of the first half. The Orange would increase its lead to 13 with 9:31 remaining in the half, but Longwood would continue to battle strong pulling the game back to single digits minutes later. Billups would pull the Lancers within seven with 7:59 remaining in the half, after knocking down a jumper in the paint with an assist from classmate Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West).  Syracuse would open things up moments later, going on an 11-0 run with a little over four minutes remaining in the half. The two teams headed to the locker room with the Orange having a 17 point advantage.  
   
The second half belonged to the Orange who continued to knock down baskets, jumping out to a 33 point lead at one point during the game.
   
Nicole Michael of Syracuse was the games leading scorer with 14 points. Sims, Loughner and Billups led the charge for the Lancers with six baskets a piece. Chandrea Jones recorded a double-double for Syracuse, posting 11 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Becky Fernandes/Fort Belvoir (Bishop Ireton) was the Lancers leading rebound grabbing five.
   
Longwood shot 28% (16-58) from the floor, while shooting 50% (5-10) from the free-throw line. Syracuse was 47% (24-51) from the floor and 76% (19-25) from the charity stripe.
