JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Longwood University men's soccer team (6-5-1) fell on the road at the University of North Florida (7-6) on Tuesday evening by the final score of 3-1. The Lancers had jumped on the board early with a goal from junior
Brian Germain/McLean (Langley) in the opening minutes of the game. Longwood returns to action on Tuesday, October 21, staying on the road to face the University of Virginia of the ACC in Charlottesville beginning at 7 p.m..
Germain's early goal came in the second minute of the game after gathering a pass from classmate
Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College). Germain lobbed the ball past the North Florida keeper from about 12 yards out, giving the Lancers an early lead. Longwood continued to own possession of the game for the next 15 minutes of the game, out-shooting the Ospreys 8-1 in the first half while having a 6-2 advantage in corners. The hosts would manage to get a goal before the end of the half, sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1.
“We started the game on a positive note,” said head coach
Jon Atkinson. “However, we allowed the game to get away from us. We have to be more consistent and stay positive, taking our chances and playing smart soccer.”
The second half of action would be a different story for the Lancers, watching the Ospreys take control of the game. North Florida would squeeze-in two more goals, giving them the 3-1 win.
Freshman goalkeeper
Joel Helmick/Springfield (W.T. Woodson) played the whole game for the Lancers, making two saves. Vickerton led the game in shots taken, firing six shots on-goal.
