FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood sophomore shooting guard
Al Burge will transfer to the University of Charleston, fourth-year head coach
Jayson Gee announced Saturday.
Burge, a native of Garfield Heights, Ohio, will continue his college career at Gee's alma mater and the same institution where Gee held his first head coach post from 1996-2003.
Burge appeared in 13 games in his freshman season as a Lancer, averaging 2.3 minutes, 1.2 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. He came to Longwood by way of Garfield Heights High School and the South Carolina Sports Academy, where he spent one postgraduate year after suffering a knee injury during his senior year of high school.
"We are thankful for the contributions Al made to our program. We support him in his decision to seek more playing time at the Division II level," said Gee, who led Charleston to a seven-year record of 160-55 from 1996-2003. "I'm excited for my alma mater, University of Charleston, to have someone of Al's ability representing their institution. I am fortunate to serve as a mentor to [Charleston head coach] Dwaine Osborne, and I know he's looking forward to coaching a young man of Al's high character and talent."
Burge's departure leaves Longwood with seven guards heading into the 2016-17 campaign, including returners
Darrion Allen,
Isaac Belton and
Bryan Gee, transfers
B.K. Ashe,
