FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University 30th-year baseball head coach Charles ‘Buddy’ Bolding has announced his recruiting class for 2008-09. Joining the Lancers for the upcoming year will be true freshmen Matt Gwaltney/Chesterfield (Matoaca), Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton), Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem), D.J. Pomposini/Danville (GW-Danville), Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby), Mike Stancik/Ashburn (Stone Bridge), and Matt Yuhas/Freehold, N.J. (Freehold Boro). The group of seven recently signed national letters of intent to attend Longwood.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University’s Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) has been named to the 2008 VaSID University Division All-State Baseball Team, as selected by the state’s sports information directors. The College of William and Mary first baseman Mike Sheridan (.423, 15 HR, 72 RBI) was named as the Player of the Year, University of Virginia right-hander Michael Schwimer (3-1, 14 saves, 1.72 ERA) was chosen as Pitcher of the Year, James Madison University head coach Spanky McFarland (39-19, 20-9 CAA) is the Coach of the Year, and JMU right-hander Turner Phelps (8-0, 3.87 ERA) was picked as the Rookie of the Year.

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University softball seniors Ryan Washington/Bealton (Liberty) and Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) were both named to the 2008 VaSID All-State Team, with Washington earning first-team honors, while Hooe made the second-team. This is the fourth time that both players have made the All-State team. George Mason’s Ashli Breau earned Player of the Year, while Angela Tincher of Virginia Tech earned her second straight Pitcher of the Year award. FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University sixth-year men’s basketball head coach Mike Gillian has announced his recruiting class for the upcoming 2008-09 campaign. Joining the Lancers for the upcoming season are true freshmen Antwan Carter/St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) and Martiz Washington/Hopewell (Christchurch School). The pair of high school standouts signed national letters of intent during the recent spring signing period. Longwood will open November 14, hosting Virginia-Wise at Willett Hall in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University freshman Justin Morreim/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) has been named to the 2008 Division I Baseball All-Independent second-team, while senior Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley), junior John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac), and sophomore David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Motoaca) each garnered Independent All-Academic Team honors. Le Moyne College outfielder Chris Edmondson (.367, 14 HR, 64 RBI) has been selected as the Division I Independent Baseball Player of the Year, teammate and right-hander Eric Beaulac (9-2, 2.83 ERA) was chosen as Pitcher of the Year, Dallas Baptist University head coach Dan Heefner (37-19) is the Coach of the Year, and NYIT third baseman Effrey Valdez (.332, 10 HR, 44 RBI) was picked as the Newcomer of the Year.

Cipriani joins the Lancers after four years as a student-athlete at Wake Forest University, helping the Demon Deacons to the 2004 National Championship.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University men's golf head coach Kevin Fillman has announced his 2008 recruiting class that includes Ross Sumner/Callao (Northumberland), Stewart Surratt/Harrisonburg (Harrisonburg), Kenny Leech/Boca Raton, Fla. LEXINGTON, Va. -- Longwood University took a 6-4 baseball decision on the road at VMI Wednesday night at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington. It was the final game of the season for the Lancers who finished 2008 with a final record of 23-26-1, while the Keydets of the Big South Conference are now 26-24 overall. Longwood attained its 27th overall 20-win campaign in the program’s 31-year history, while 30th-year head coach Charles ‘Buddy’ Bolding completes the year with an overall coaching record of 818-435-4.

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood University first year women’s basketball coach Kristin Caruso has announced the signing of Emma Zieverink/West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West) for the 2008-09 season. Zieverink comes to Longwood after helping her high school team to the Ohio State Finals, where they lost a nail-bitter at the buzzer. The 6-0 power forward averaged six points and five rebounds a game for Lakota West, the 16th best high school in the country.
