ROCK HILL, S.C. – Longwood University swept a pair of softball games on Saturday at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational in Rock Hill, South Carolina, defeating UNC Wilmington 3-2 in the first game before exploding for 17 runs, including a 10-run seventh inning, in a 17-1 victory over Gardner-Webb University. Junior Nichole Simmons/Chesapeake (Hickory) drove in two runs in the first game while classmate Briana Wells/Romoland, Calif. (Paloma Valley) went 2-0 in the circle and improved to 12-3 on the season. The Lancers hit five home runs in the second game for the second time this season. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, March 14, when it faces Providence College at 9 a.m. and USC Upstate at 1 p.m. in Rock Hill.

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Longwood University women’s lacrosse team rallied past Mount St. Mary’s University 11-10 on Saturday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Junior Cara O’Brien/Arlington (Bishop O’Connell) led the Lancers with four goals and one assist while junior Karli Brentlinger/Gambrills, Md. (South River) added three goals, including the game-winner. Longwood (2-3) returns to action on Tuesday, March 16, when they face the University of Richmond in Richmond at 4 p.m..

FARMVILLE, Va. -- The scheduled Longwood University home baseball doubleheader against visiting Marist College at Bolding Stadium in Farmville for today, Saturday (March 13), at 1 p.m. has been canceled due to unplayable wet field conditions. The Lancers (7-4) and Red Foxes (4-7) will now attempt to play a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, March 14, at Bolding Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m.. Admission is free to all Longwood Baseball games at Bolding Stadium.

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-3 baseball decision to visiting Marist College Friday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers (7-4) and Red Foxes (4-7) were tied at 3-3 through six innings before the visitors scored three runs in the seventh inning for the victory. Longwood and Marist of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) will continue a four-game weekend series on Saturday, March 13, with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m..

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University redshirt-senior men’s basketball standout Dana Smith/Woodbridge (C.D. Hylton) has been named as one of nine finalists nationwide for the prestigious V Foundation Comeback Award for 2010. Smith is a finalist for the second-straight year as he was one of 12 finalists for 2009. The V Foundation for Cancer Research announced the finalists today for the 10th annual award to be presented in conjunction with ESPN as the recipient will be announced March 30 during ESPN’s basketball coverage. He has overcome three serious knee injuries in four years (12.5.07 - left ACL; 11.15.06 - right - two menisci; 11.17.03 / high school - right ACL), while remaining healthy his final two seasons, including averages of 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds this year to lead the Lancers who finished 12-19 for their second-best record as a Division I program following last year’s winning mark of 17-14.
