Tyler Birnbaum is in his third year as Assistant Director of Athletics Communications at Longwood in 2025-26 after being hired in September 2023.
Birnbaum, a 15-year veteran of the field, oversees the communications and media relations efforts for the Lancers’ women’s basketball, softball, men's soccer and men’s and women’s tennis teams.
He came to Farmville following five years as Sports Information Assistant at the NCAA Division III University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he was the primary contact for all 19 sports. In northwest Wisconsin, he helped elevate the Yellowjackets’ social media presence while also redesigning all department marketing materials. Birnbaum also worked to expand statistical histories for all sports and helped the school earn seven College Sports Communicators Academic All-America
® Team honors.
Prior to his time in Superior, Birnbaum spent more than two years at the University of Memphis as the Creative Coordinator for athletics. He created visual communications projects, including a variety of print and social-media content, to promote the Tigers’ 19 sports. His graphic featuring wide receiver Anthony Miller was named “Best in the Nation” in the university division infographic category in the 2017 CSC Publications and Digital Design Contest.
He was graduate assistant in Missouri State University Athletics Communications, working with 10 sports in his time with the Bears while earning a master’s degree in 2015. Prior to Springfield, Birnbaum spent to two seasons at Division III Salisbury University as the primary contact for the nationally ranked baseball and football teams as well as three others.
He earned his first full-time role in the field at the Division I University of Maryland Eastern Shore in 2008 and worked with 10 sports, including men’s and women’s basketball and baseball, over three seasons in Princess Anne, Md.
He has also spent two summers in Minor League Baseball with the Delmarva Shorebirds (Single-A, Baltimore Orioles) in 2010 and the Double-A Texas League in 2015.
He worked for two-and-a-half years in the sports information office at his alma mater, Colby-Sawyer College, in New London, N.H., graduating in 2008.
While in high school, he got his feet wet in the industry as an intern at the University of Vermont, assisting with the communications needs of the men’s hockey team. From there, he spent six years covering the Catamounts for U.S. College Hockey Online and has been to 13 men’s hockey Frozen Fours as a fan.

A Plainfield, Vt., native, he is an active member of College Sports Communicators.
