Melnyk joined the Longwood baseball staff in the summer of 2023 after spending five seasons as a pitcher for the Lancers.
During his time in Farmville as a player, he worked as both a starter and reliever, and he tossed 191.2 innings. He struck out 157 batters in that time frame. He was also a member of SAAC, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, for two years as the baseball representative.
In his fifth and final year, he notched a 3.00 ERA out of the bullpen while going 1-1 with one save. He held opposing batters to a .189 batting average, and he struck out 24 to only eight walks in 15.0 innings out of the 'pen.
Over his first two full seasons, in 2019 and 2021 after COVID canceled the bulk of the 2020 season, he worked as a starter. The lefthander led the team in innings in 2021 with 74, and he started all 14 of his appearances that season. He had a 5.84 ERA while striking out a career best 55 with only 23 walks, and he went 2-4.
Melnyk hails from Virginia Beach, and he graduated from Longwood with his bachelor's degree in business administration in May, 2023.
