CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Longwood junior goalkeeper Madie Wessel has been named Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week in women's soccer, the league announced on Monday.
A Sewell, N.J., native, Wessel made the first two starts of her career in net for Longwood, keeping clean sheets in both last week for the Lancers. She turned aside six shots in a scoreless draw at Richmond on Thursday, five of which came after halftime, and followed it with a second shutout as Longwood beat Hampton, 1-0, at home on Sunday.
In three matches this season — her first action as a collegian — Wessel is 1-0-1 with a 0.00 goals-against average and seven saves.
The Big South weekly honor is the first of Wessel's career. Classmate Berni Wayland earned the award earlier this season on Aug. 24.
Longwood (3-3-1) is back in action Thursday at 6 p.m., hosting George Mason on ESPN+. The Lancers will wear gold shoelaces in its Go4theGoal match in support of pediatric cancer awareness.
