FARMVILLE, Va. — Madison Fitzpatrick scored in the 43rd minute and Madie Wessel recorded her second consecutive clean sheet as the Longwood women's soccer team defeated Hampton, 1-0, at the Longwood Athletics Complex on Sunday.
Fitzpatrick broke through with 2:48 remaining in the first half, beating Hampton goalkeeper Jackie Jenkins low to the right corner to give the Lancers the lead. Fitzpatrick's goal, assisted by sophomores Phoebe Ganion and Reese Coggeshall, who earned their first collegiate points, was her second of the season and eighth of her career.
"Happy to get our first home win, but credit to Hampton for making us fight to the end for it," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "We had a good start to the game playing in their end and creating chances but we lacked urgency in that final third. Fitz found that breakthrough for us which was ultimately the game winner. We weren't perfect defensively but found a way to maintain the clean sheet. We will enjoy the win tonight and then focus on a very strong Mason team heading our way Thursday."
Longwood controlled much of the match, outshooting Hampton 14-3 and putting seven shots on goal. Hampton goalkeeper Jacqueline Jenkins made five saves to keep the Pirates within one.
Wessel, making just her second collegiate start, did not need to make a save in the match. The junior goalkeeper also posted a clean sheet in her first career start Thursday at Richmond, when she made six saves in a 0-0 draw.
Longwood improved to 3-3-1, while Hampton fell to 1-4-1.
Fitzpatrick finished with two shots, including one on goal, while Sam Fischer and Meghan Piazza each put two shots on target for the Lancers.
Longwood returns to action Thursday, hosting George Mason at 6 p.m., on ESPN+.
