FARMVILLE, Va. — Senior Meghan Piazza scored in the 81st minute and Longwood rallied for a 1-1 draw with George Mason on Thursday at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Piazza's first goal of the season came with 9:09 remaining in regulation. Brooke Owens provided the assist on a long ball off of a restart at the midfield stripe as Longwood erased a one-goal deficit and earned a point against the Patriots.
"That was a wild ride, for sure," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "Going down a goal on the penalty kick and then having the weather delay definitely made for a challenging evening. Mason was very strong in possession and had us chasing shadows at times. When we were able to get close to them, we created some transition moments that led to positive attacking sequences for us. Bottom line, our players showed a new level of competitiveness that kept us in the fight all night long and they deserved to get something out of it."
George Mason took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Mia Arevalo-Delcid converted a penalty kick for her third goal of the season.
Play was halted for more than an hour due to lightning in the area and resumed with less than five minutes to play in the first half.
Longwood controlled much of the second half and finished with an 11-10 advantage in shots. The Lancers also held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Madie Wessel (1-0-2) made three saves for Longwood, including a pair in the opening 20 minutes and another in the 64th minute to keep the Lancers within striking distance.
Longwood had several chances to take the lead late. Taylor Martin put a shot on goal after Piazza's equalizer, while Peyton Curney sent a shot wide in the final minute in the final seconds.
The Lancers moved to 3-3-2 on the season, while George Mason is now 3-2-2.
Longwood returns to action Sunday when it hosts UMBC for Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., and will be streamed on ESPN+.
