FARMVILLE, Va. — UMBC scored twice in a two-minute span late in the first half and held on to defeat the Longwood women's soccer team 2-0 on Sunday.
Zoe Brossman converted a penalty kick in the 29th minute to put the Retrievers ahead. Olivia Nardone doubled the lead just 1:49 later, scoring off assists from Kristiana Kolega and Hailey Ahmed on a corner kick.
"That was disappointing to say the least," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "The first half we were out coached, out worked and out classed in all phases of the game. We just weren't ready to play and that falls on me. The second half was a little better for us, but we never really threatened to make a game of it. We have no choice but to use this result to make us better. Certainly now we are humbled and motivated going into conference play next weekend."
Longwood (3-4-2) managed five shots in the second half but could not break through against UMBC goalkeeper Amara Codd, who made two saves to record the clean sheet. The Lancers finished with seven shots, including two on goal.
Madison Fitzpatrick, Reese Coggeshall and Berni Wayland each put a shot on target for Longwood, with Wayland recording the team's other shot on goal.
Longwood goalkeeper Madie Wessel made five saves in the first half before Lexie Miller took over after halftime and stopped three shots. The Lancers combined for eight saves.
UMBC (6-2-2) finished with a 17-7 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. The Retrievers also put 11 shots on target compared with two for Longwood.
Prior to kickoff, the Lancers honored their four seniors — Peyton Curney, Fitzpatrick, Meghan Piazza and Coryn Silberstein.
Longwood returns to action Saturday, opening Big South Conference play against High Point at home. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
