FARMVILLE, Va. — Chloe Edwards scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute Saturday as High Point rallied past the Longwood women's soccer team, 2-1, in both teams' Big South Conference opener at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
High Point (2-6-1, 1-0) opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Aleena Ulke scored in the 25th minute, assisted by Taylor Howarth, for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore McKenna Vogel equalized for Longwood (3-5-2, 0-1 Big South) in the 32nd minute when McKenna Vogel scored her second goal of the season off set-piece service from senior Coryn Silberstein. The Farmville native's header beat High Point goalkeeper Nylah Mirshafiei. High into the roof of the net.
"That was a typical Big South battle," Longwood head coach Todd Dyer said. "Tight game, both teams fighting for the result until the end. Both teams had their soccer moments and created chances but we came up a little short in the end. The goals we conceded were messy, so we will look to clean that up moving forward."
The Panthers then found the decisive goal in the 75th and Edwards scored her second goal of the year to put High Point ahead 2-1.
Longwood goalkeeper Madie Wessel made four saves, while Mirshafiei stopped three shots.
High Point finished with a 15-11 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on goal to Longwood's five. The Panthers also held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Longwood's Taylor Martin recorded two shots on goal, while Vogel finished with two shots, both on target, including her goal. Peyton Curney added three shots for the Lancers.
The Lancers return to action Sept. 26 when they host USC Upstate at 2 p.m., on ESPN+.
