Lancers Drop MAC Opener to RedHawks

FARMVILLE, Va. — Longwood field hockey suffered a 7-0 setback to Miami University in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams on Thursday evening at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field.
 

Junior goalkeeper Sophie Mooldijk led the way for the Lancers with 13 saves, her fifth games of double-digits saves this season. 

How It Happened
  • The Lancers and RedHawks played a scoreless first quarter with Mooldijk making six saves to highlight the Lancers defensive effort. Freshman Sawyer Anderson also tallied her first career defensive save in the period. 
  • Miami (3-3, 1-0 MAC) broad through with three goals in a span of less than a minute in the second quarter. Bet Gifra hammered the first of the scoring frenzy at the 24:10 mark. Just four seconds later, Sloane Wearren dribbled the ball into the circle and scored point blank. The RedHawks earned a penalty corner, and Máxi Aguirregomezcorta found the back of the cage jus 54 seconds after the initial tally of the game. Justina Intez wrapped up the first half scoring in the 28th minute to give the visitor at 4-0 lead at the half. 
  • Three minutes into the third quarter, Malena Sabez scored her first goal of the match off of a penalty stroke.
  • At 46:32, Girf scored her second of the night, this one from the middle of the shooting circle. Kylie Coughlin wrapped up the RedHawks scoring at the 58-minute mark with a goal.

The Lancers (0-6, 0-1 MAC) hit the road for two matches next week in MAC play. Longwood travels to face Bellarmine on Friday, Sept. 25, at 3 p.m., before heading to Ball State on Sunday, Sept. 27, at 12 p.m.
