Lancers Fall 11-8 in Slugfest to No. 3 USC Upstate

Howard Cranks Season-Best Four Hits, but Bentley's Grand Slam Powers USC Upstate

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Longwood baseball never stopped being aggressive, but No. 3-seed USC Upstate edged the Lancers (29-26) 11-8 on Wednesday night to open up the Big South Tournament.

Trey Bentley's grand slam for USC Upstate (30-27) in the sixth separated the two sides after a furious Longwood rally had tied the game in the top half of the inning.

For the Lancers, Jon Howard put up a season-best four hits, and Ben Pulliam, Tré Keels and Mac Tufts all had multiple hits as well. Pulliam had a team-best three RBI while Howard hit his team-leading 13th home run of the season for a Longwood team that was making its first playoff appearance since 2018.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lancers led off each of the first three innings with doubles, but USC Upstate struck first in the bottom of the first on a home run by Henry Zenor.

However, Longwood tied it in the third thanks to an RBI single from Pulliam.

In the fourth, Keels then bunted for a hit and stole second before coming home on a sacrifice fly a few batters later from Bentley Yeatts to give the team a 2-1 lead.

However, Upstate took advantage of a Lancer error to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, and Preston Lucas gave his side a two-run lead with a single that made it 4-2.

Longwood answered with a run in the fifth when Howard sent a two-out screamer over the wall in dead center to cut the lead to 4-3, but Upstate again plated three in the fifth.

The Lancers rallied with four runs in the sixth to tie the game. Mac Tufts started the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice, and both Jae'dan Carter and Pulliam doubled to the corners to tie the game at seven all.

Bentley swatted his grand slam to give Upstate the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning.

Longwood added one more on an RBI double by Howard in the eighth, but the Spartan bullpen was able to keep the aggressive Lancers at bay in the ninth.

Max Bianchini (4-2) got the win in relief, coming on in the sixth inning to throw 1.1 scoreless innings. He struck out one while giving up two hits and two walks.

Cal Travers (0-2) took the loss for Longwood after coming on in the fifth. He gave up three runs on one hit and one walk while striking out one.
