Baseball Forces Extras, but Falls to VCU 6-4

Lancers Rally Behind RBI Base Knocks from McMullan, Lawson, but VCU Wins in 10 Innings

FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood baseball rallied with four unanswered runs to force extra innings on Tuesday against VCU at Buddy Bolding Stadium, but VCU (18-14) plated two in the tenth to narrowly edge the Lancers (19-14) 6-4.

For Longwood, Max Lawson had a multi-hit game while driving in the tying runs, but clutch base hits in the 10th from Dante DeFranco and Jacob Lee put home the game-winning runs for VCU.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

VCU struck first with an RBI single by Alec Warden in the first, and three runs crossed in the third when the Rams loaded the bases in the second. Warden again had an RBI base knock as the visitors led 4-0.

Longwood's pitching staff settled things down though, as Ethan Plesser and Cal Travers combined for five scoreless frames to finish off the eighth.

Meanwhile, Longwood's offense scratched and singled its way back into the game.

In the fourth, Ben Pulliam came home on a Jayson Nash chopper that got lost in the sun on the left side of the infield.

Then, Longwood tied it with back-to-back two-out base hits in the sixth. Jack McMullan poked home Pulliam to cut the lead to 4-2, and Lawson tied with a slicing two-run single down the right field line.

Both sides threatened from there, but VCU was the one to finally break through in the 10th after JR Fordham helped the Lancers escape a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth.

DeFranco broke the 4-4 stalemate with a single to shallow center, and Lee extended it to 6-4 two batters later.

Cooper Campbell (2-1) earned the win for VCU after pitching the ninth and 10th. He surrendered two hits but did not give up a run.

Fordham (1-2) took the tough luck loss for Longwood. He gave up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one in one inning of work.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Never fun losing an extra-inning game," said Longwood Head Coach Ray Noe. "We had our chances there in the ninth with Brogan Jones and Jon Howard unfortunately couldn't get it done today. I'll take my chances with those guys at the plate though, and both took quality swings that just didn't fall."

"We need to figure out a way to stop being so up and down and just have some consistency," added Noe. "Make the routine plays, communicate, have a greater understanding of the situations that are presented, being one step ahead of the decisions that need to be made to make winning plays, etc... We are being haunted by mental mistakes that must be corrected."
