LEXINGTON, Va. – Round two between Longwood and VMI baseball was a whiteknuckle affair from start to finish in a stark reversal from one week ago.
The first time the two teams met, the Lancers (26-19) outslugged VMI (27-17). Today, VMI narrowly edged the Lancers 3-0 in a game that had nine total hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Neither offense got much going early on, as Longwood's Jackson Nash and VMI's Clark Driscoll matched each other with three scoreless frames.
VMI struck first in the fourth inning when Cole Raile hit a two-run home run to left field to break the scoreless stalemate.
An RBI fielder's choice in the seventh for VMI drove in the only other run.
That was enough, though, as the Lancer offense never got fully unlocked. While Longwood had five hits, VMI's combination of Driscoll, Hunter Sipe and Tyler Bassett kept the Lancers off balance enough to keep Longwood off the board for the first time this season.
Longwood did bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Keydets wiggled out of the jam.
Sipe (5-2) picked up the relief win with 4.1 innings of relief work. Bassett (1) got the save by closing out the final two outs of the ninth.
Nash (2-2) took the loss for Longwood. He gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out four in 4.0 innings.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Not a whole lot of offense in today's game," said Longwood Head Coach Ray Noe. "We scattered five hits throughout the day and really had no loud outs at all. Pretty lack luster."
"Really happy with Nash's start," Noe added about his righthander. "That's two outings in a row now where he has looked the part. I thought the bullpen was good and got some big outs in some leverage situations when we needed them. Looking forward to flipping the page and getting after a really good High Point team this weekend."
UP NEXT:
Longwood stays on the road for a weekend series back in Big South play at High Point. First pitch on Friday night is set for 6 p.m., and it is scheduled to air on ESPN+.
