Lancers Fall to Winthrop on Senior Day, 8-6

Final game of series canceled for medical emergency in crowd

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood softball team's comeback attempt fell short Saturday against Winthrop in an 8-6 loss at Bank of the James Park on senior day.

Winthrop scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth, building a 6-0 lead before Longwood rallied for four in the bottom of the fifth to cut into the lead. The Eagles put the game away with a two-run Tia Beckham home run in the top of the sixth to make it 8-4.

Avery Miller capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-run blast of her own off of Lonna Addison.

The Lancers honored their four seniors — Maggie Chapin, Sophia Knock, Morgan Strickland and Kate Westmiller — in a pregame ceremony.

The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to a medical emergency in the stands. The game will not be rescheduled.

Winthrop got on the board as Chapin uncorked her third wild pitch of the third inning, this one to Beckham, scoring Rebecca Amos with two out. Beckham then hit a bouncer that Lauren Faulkner mishandled a shortstop as Nickens came around to score.

Carli Pearson coaxed a bases-loaded walk later in the inning for a 3-0 lead.

Winthrop (26-19, 11-3) added three more in the fourth on a Peyton Bryden two-RBI single to left field and an Annelisa Winebarger sacrifice fly that plated Bryden.

The Lancers (21-29, 7-7) cut into the lead with four runs in the fifth, all with two out. Westmiller lined a single to center to score Ava Abromavage. Two batters later, Brooke Bennett singled through the left side to score Westmiller before a Miller RBI single to the pitcher and Maggie Hiatt bases-loaded walk made it 6-4.

After Beckham's homer in the top of the sixth, Miller ripped a two-run shot over the wall in left, as well, but Longwood got no closer.

Emmy Cardenas improved to 6-6 with 4 2/3 innings in the circle. She gave up five hits and four runs. Grayson Buckner walked two in relief prior to Addison come on to get the final seven outs.

Chapin (13-10) started and took the loss for Longwood in 2 2/3 innings. She gave up one earned run and walked five with six strikeouts.

Amos went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks for the Eagles. Miller was 2-for-4, knocking in three runs on her birthday.

The Lancers close the regular season next weekend at Gardner-Webb. The series begins with a single game Friday at 4 p.m., on ESPN+.
