UNCG Takes 14-1 Decision over Softball

Bennett hits leadoff home run in loss

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Brooke Bennett blasted her team-leading ninth home run of the season on the first pitch of the game, but it was all UNCG from there, as the Spartans scored in every inning on the way to a 14-1 run-rule victory on Wednesday.

Bennett pulled Salem Ward's first offering over the wall in left field to give Longwood the lead. UNCG, however, responded with a pair of three-run homers in the bottom of the first by Macy Michael and second from Nya South, respectively, to take a commanding lead. The Spartans (31-15) benefitted from eight walks by four Longwood pitchers n the contest, including four with the bases loaded.

"Moments," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "Life is made up of moments and you have to be ready for yours. We have six games left. All six are must wins. We are at the must-win time of year. How we handle each moment as a team and as individuals will determine the fate of our season. You can't hide from it you can't burry your head in the sand. You have to confront each moment head on and attack it."

Cierra Gawryluk (3-9) started for the Lancers and last 1 1/3 inning before giving way to KK Byas, Morgan Strickland and Mallory Sanders. Gawryluk re-entered the game to register the final out of the UNCG fifth.

Ward improved to 9-7 on the year, limiting the Lancers to three hits, two walks and a hit by pitch.

Maggie Hiatt added a single to center field one batter after the Bennett homer and Sarah Terrell singled to right field with one out in the second for the other Longwood base hits.

South drove in a game-high four runs, while Jazmin Mejia went 3-for-3 with three runs scored as part of UNCG's 11 hit attack.

Longwood (21-27) is back home to open its final home series of the season Saturday with a 1 p.m., doubleheader on Saturday.
