FARMVILLE, Va. — Freshman second baseman Lauren Faulkner belted a three-run home run to left field as part of a four-run first inning for the Longwood softball team in the second game of a Big South doubleheader against league-leading USC Upstate, but the Spartans battled all the way back to win, 9-5, and complete the sweep at Bank of the James Park on Saturday.
USC Upstate (23-13, 5-0 Big South) used a four-run second inning of its own in the first game of the day, going on for a 9-0 win in six innings.
The Spartans blasted four home runs in the nightcap, including two a in a three-run top of the third inning.
Faulkner took a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall with runners on first and second and one out to open a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Maggie Hiatt singled home Brooke Bennett two batters earlier to help the Lancers get on the board first.
Chloe Poteete failed to get out of the inning after issuing walks to Bailey Bucholz and Ava Abromavage, but Anna Dickinson retired Sophia Pisacano to escape further damage.
Mackenzei Bernal got her team on the board in the second with a two-run shot to left with one out and the Spartans slugged two more homers in the third to off the bats of Allysa Davenport and Laney Jennings as Upstate took a 5-4 lead after two and a half innings.
Up, 7-4, in the seventh, Sophia Kardatzke hit a two-run homer. Faulkner singled in Sophia Knock in the bottom of the inning for the final margin. Faulkner finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs in the game.
Upstate benefited from 10 walks allowed by Longwood right-handed starter Maggie Chapin in opener, including two with the bases loaded in the second inning. Davenport, Jennings and Ella Christopher came up with two-run base hits in the second, fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to push the lead to 8-0.
Upstate's Maddie Drerup (12-7) limited the Lancers to just a leadoff double by Bennett in the first while striking out three and walkeing two. Chapin fell to 8-9 overall, scattering just three hits and fanning nine.
Longwood (15-24, 2-3) and the Spartans close the series at 1 p.m., on Sunday on ESPN+.
