ASHEVILLE, N.C. — UNC Asheville handed the Longwood women's tennis team its first Big South loss of the season, winning 4-3 on Saturday.
The Bulldogs improved to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in the league while Lancers fell to 6-4 and 1-1, seeing their three-match winning streak come to an end.
Asheville took the doubles point and expanded its lead to 3-1 before Sofia Segui cliched the match at No. 4 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Oriana Izarra.
Hima Fernando then won at No. 3 against Avery Sager, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and Alexandra Magia defeated Maria Sol Alvarez, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, at No. 5 for the final margin.
Fernando and Elisaveta Gnilozubova won at No. 3 doubles against Sager and Alvarez, 6-0, to open the day, however, UNC Asheville took the final two doubles matches to earn the point. Angelina Joy Hug and Segui topped Izarra and Bali Song, 6-4, while Valeria Centeno and Isabella Moss beat Feline van Eijkelenburg and Magia, 7-5.
Centeno began singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Nicole Di Bisceglia at No. 6 prior to the Lancers getting on the scoreboard as van Eijkelenburg topped Moss, 6-2, 6-4, from the No. 2 spot, making it 2-1.
Hug then outlasted Song, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 before Segui clinched.
Longwood returns to the courts Tuesday, hosting Liberty at 2 p.m.
