NORTH CHARLESTON. S.C. — Sophomore Alexandra Magia topped Charleston Southern's Camila Molina in three sets at No. 5 singles to lift the Longwood women's tennis team to a 4-2 victory to open Big South play at the Gary Clark Banks Sr. Tennis Center on Thursday.
With the Lancers leading 3-2 in the dual, Magia clinched the match with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 triumph, giving Longwood its first win over the defending Big South champion Buccaneers in 13 matches since 2013. The victory is its third consecutive overall, and improves LU to 6-4 and 1-0 in the Big South.
Longwood opened the day taking the doubles point by winning on courts two and three. After Marina Skegro and Carota Farres defeated Bali Song and Oriana Izarra, 6-2, at No. 1, Magia and Feline van Eijkelenburg beat Carle and Amike Botha, 6-4, on court two and Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Hima Fernando took care of Brenda Yoris and Molina, 6-4, for an early lead in the dual.
Skegro started singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Song from the top spot in the lineup to tie the match, 1-1. Amike Botha gave CSU (6-8, 1-1) its only lead of the day with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Nicole Di Bisceglia at No. 6, but Fernando outlasted Yoris, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2 and van Eijkelenburg did the same against Farres, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, setting the stage for the clinching match.
Charleston Southern, picked to win the league title in 2026, has claimed four of the last five Big South championships overall.
Longwood is back in action Saturday at UNC Asheville. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
