HOW IT HAPPENED:Ā

LongwoodĀ took the lead in the top of the first whenĀ Brogan JonesĀ hit an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.Ā Ā

However, MattĀ IlgenfritzĀ respondedĀ inĀ the bottom of the first with a 2-run homer that gave Gardner-Webb the 2-1 lead.Ā

TheĀ Runnin'Ā Bulldogs broke openĀ the game in the fourth behind a five-run inning to turn a two-run lead into an 8-1 advantage, and it grew to 9-1 in the fifth off a wild pitch that plated one more.Ā

The Lancers started to scratch back into the game in the seventhĀ when Ben Pulliam drove in a run with a ground-rule doubleĀ to cut it to 9-2.Ā

LongwoodĀ cut the lead 9-4 in the top of the eighth from a fielder's choice from Mac Tufts and a walk with the bases loaded by Tre Keels, but the deficit proved to be too much.Ā

Reid Bertram (3-1) earned the win after pitching seven innings. He surrendered two earned runs on five hits.Ā Ā

Jackson Garland (2-1) took the loss after pitching three innings with six hitsĀ that led to five earned runs. He struck out four.Ā Ā

WHAT THEY SAID:Ā

"We weren't good enough today in any of the facets of the game to be on the winning side of the series", said Head Coach Ray Noe.Ā Ā "Credit to them for having a really good approach offensively and on the mound all weekend. They kept us off balance and didn't give us any free passes offensively while stringing together timely hits against our arms. We still have a ton of confidence in our group moving forward, and we are excited to see what next week brings us."

UP NEXT:Ā

The Lancers return to Buddy Bolding Stadium for a midweek matchup against William & Mary with first pitch scheduled at 5 p.m.Ā on Tuesday, March 17.Ā
