Lancers Outlast Gardner-Webb 3-1 in Road Battle

Homers from Pulliam and Howard Make the Difference

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Longwood clinched its first conference win of the season in a 3-1 win against Gardner-Webb on Friday night behind home runs and a sterling effort on the mound.

The Lancers (14-4, 1-0 Big South) duo of Jon Howard and Ben Pulliam swatted solo home runs, and the pitching duo of Jaxon Lloyd and JR Fordham kept the high-powered Runnin' Bulldog (10-8, 0-1 Big South) offense to only five hits on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Lloyd and Gardner-Webb's Oliver Ellison were locked in a Friday night pitcher's duel through four innings, with both keeping the other side off the board.

Fittingly for Longwood, aggressive baserunning got them on the board. Tre Keels raced home off a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead in the fifth.

Jon Howard widened the lead in the sixth with a solo homer to left field to put the Lancers up 2-0. It was his seventh of the season.

Gardner-Webb came back in the seventh and cut the lead to 2-1 after Zack Thompson stole home.

Ben Pulliam extended the lead 3-1 after clobbering a homer to right field in the ninth. It is his second of the season.

Jaxon Lloyd (4-0) earned the win after pitching 6.2 innings, giving up only one run and two walks while striking out five.

JR Fordham got his third save of the season, pitched 2.1 innings of solid relief work with only one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

Ellison (3-1) took his first loss of the season, pitching seven innings with two earned runs, eight strikeouts, and one walk.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"Tonight was exactly what a Friday night game looks like in conference play", said Head Coach Ray Noe. "Great pitching by both sides, and thankfully for us we had enough offense to get it done in the end. Lloyd and Fordham were dominant on the pitching side, two big swings from Ben Pulliam and Jon Howard were enough to have us be on the winning side. I'm looking forward to our team's focus, energy and commitment to our plans for the rest of the series."

UP NEXT:

The Lancers will face off against Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Mar 14, for game two of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
