Boston College Nips Lancers, 3-1, in NFCA Leadoff Classic Finale

Chapin fans eight, Bennett ropes run-scoring triple in loss

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Sophomore Brooke Bennett ripped a triple to the gap in right-center field with one out in the top of the sixth inning to score Lauren Faulkner and the Longwood softball team threatened in the seventh, but Boston College came away with a 3-1 win to close the NFCA DI Leadoff Classic Sunday.

BC catcher Abby Ptak drove in all three Eagles' runs with a two-run single in the first and a solo home run to left field in the fifth off of Maggie Chapin. The Longwood right-hander settled in, however, to scatter six hits and post her third consecutive complete-game outing with eight strikeouts.

"Great process leads to great results," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "Right now, our process isn't consistent so the results aren't what we want. The season is a marathon. Refinement of process is what winning requires. You can't lose sight of where you want to be in May as you work through February. Lots of work ahead before next weekend."

Chapin worked out of a bases-loaded jam with consecutive strikeouts to end the third inning and stranded two more Eagles in the fourth to keep it a 2-0 game and give the Longwood bats an opportunity to get going.

Ptak, though, led off the fifth inning by taking a 1-1 offering over the fence to extend the Boston College (2-3) lead

Longwood got the run back in the top of the sixth. Faulkner beat out an infield single with one out before the Bennett triple got her team on the board. Following a groundout, Maggie Hiatt coaxed a five-pitch walk off of BC starter Emily VanCleef, putting runners on the corners, but Avery Miller hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Longwood again threatened in the top of the seventh as Sarah Terrell hit a single to left with one out, but Halie Pappion bookended a walk to Ava Abromavage with a pair of strikeouts to nail down the win.

Chapin dropped to 0-3 on the year with the loss while VanCleef improved to 1-0 with 5 2/3 innings of three-hit ball. Pappion claimed her first save.

Sophia Knock, who went 4-for-8 three walks and a homer on the weekend, was named to the all-tournament team.

The Lancers (0-5) are back in action Friday-Sunday, hosting the Longwood Invitational at Bank of the James Park against Toledo and Virginia. Longwood opens the event against the Rockets Friday at 3 p.m.
