HOW IT HAPPENED:
It was back and forth between both teams from the get-go.
UMBC scored first on an RBI single by Ehi Okojie, but Longwood answered quickly in the bottom of the first. Tre Keels roped a double down the left line to score two.
UMBC responded in the third, when Danny Orr doubled to center field to drive a run home to cut it to 3-2.
Howard clobbered a home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth to widen the lead to 4-2.
Okojie struck back in the top of the sixth by scoring off a sacrifice fly from Danny Wyatt.
It didn't take long for the Lancers to find an answer when
Jayson Nash stole home to keep Longwood up two.
Jesiah Carpe hit a sac fly for UMBC in the top of the seventh to cut it to 5-4, but Longwood again answered.
Freshman
JT Brown hit his first collegiate homer with a solo shot in the eighth for a 6-4 lead.
Lloyd and Nash combined for nine solid innings on the mound. Lloyd (2-0) earned the win with seven strikeouts against four runs, three earned, in 6.0 innings. Nash (1) tossed three shutout frames to pick up the save. He struck out three against one hit and one walk.
Eddie Sargent (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks in 5.0 innings for UMBC.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"We thought if we stuck to the approach, we would be able to statistically have some impact against them", said Head Coach
Ray Noe. "I thought the guys did a really good job of just committing to it. And we had a lot of traction, and it finally broke, so I kept telling them to keep getting guys on base. And the one big swing by JT really helped in the eighth to give us a little bit of grace going into the ninth. But I thought the offense did a really good job."
"They're a scrappy and good team, [UMBC Head Coach] Liam [Bowen] does a great job. We knew coming in that this would be a tough test for us, and you saw really good baseball across the board. This is their first time on a field in gosh knows how long, so to be able to play like that and play clean is a testament to what they do", said Head Coach
Ray Noe. "Joe [Castrichini] and Brady [Hoover] will give us a good start, and we've got everyone on deck now for the bullpen, so just looking to hopefully close out the series and compete through the day."
UP NEXT:
The Lancers are back at Buddy Bolding Stadium to close out the three-game series with a doubleheader, scheduled to start at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m.
